Student Engineering Society

Building resilient systems under one Umbrella

A lab for ambitious tinkerers: antennas to actuators to APIs, short sprints, methodical tests, and documentation so the chaos stays useful.

What we do

Our aim is to upskill UNSW students by pursuing passions through short‑term, high‑intensity engineering projects. We prioritise hands‑on learning—prototyping, testing and delivering solutions tied to real industry needs. Tight project cycles build experience with requirements, risk, version control and design reviews while members create a credible portfolio and grow into collaborative engineers for UNSW and beyond.

Weekly

Build Nights

Two‑hour team sessions where everyone leaves with something shipped. Clear assignments, mixed‑discipline teams, supervised tool use and PPE, plus pre‑approved risk assessments.

Training

Skills Workshops

Electronics fundamentals, CAD/CAM, 3D printing, laser cutting and makerspace inductions—beginner to advanced. Each session includes a safety briefing and competency checkpoints.

Showcase

Industry Nights

Mini‑expos to demo prototypes, hear feedback from engineers and explore paths to internships, research and startups. Quiet, inclusive, and focused on constructive conversation.

Projects

Our first three cross‑disciplinary projects. We build, test and document everything openly.

AD‑01 · UAS
Aerospace · Autonomy

Autonomous Agricultural Drone

Fixed‑wing/quad hybrid exploration for crop monitoring and spot‑spraying: airframe design, autopilot tuning, SLAM‑assisted navigation and safe mission planning.

EX‑02 · Robotics
Mechatronics

Exo‑skeletal Arm

Wearable powered arm with high‑torque actuation and closed‑loop control. Focus on comfort, modular mechanics, and low‑latency sensing for precise assistance.

AF‑03 · Aero
Aero · Testing

Aerofoil Project

Design and test of adaptive aerofoil concepts. Wind‑tunnel characterization, CFD validation, and embedded control to study morphing profiles and lift/drag trade‑offs.

Join Project Umbrella

We recruit each term. Roles include electronics, controls, software, mechanical design, operations and comms. New to engineering? Apply anyway—we care about mindset and grit.
